All about the puppies:
Mom and Puppy Care: All of our dogs live in the home with either us or with our wonderful Guardian Families as a member of the family. I am lucky enough to be able to stay home where I have the time to make sure our puppies get special TLC from the minute they are born. They are born in a beautiful whelping pen that was built with the comfort of the mom and pups in mind. Moms can come and go as they need, for food, water,go potty, or just stretch their legs. Their special bedding is changed at least twice daily to make sure that Mom and pups are dry and comfortable. I sleep in the room with them for the first two weeks making sure that the pups are always warm, able to snuggle with mom and not stuck behind her, (a sad but not uncommon occurrence if left unsupervised) and are nursing well. They are watched over constantly and held often even from birth. Our moms also get nourishing high quality grain free puppy food, plus added protein (homemade chicken jerky), plain Greek yogurt, sardines, homemade sweet potato treats, to keep give her added calcium, protein, DHA to inhanse their strength and to ensure her pups get a good supply of nice rich milk while nursing. Our Moms are treated like queens and always allowed full access to the puppies at all times of the day and night. A puppy’s access to its Mom is crucial and one of the most important things needed to ensure a healthy, happy, well adjusted pup.
As our puppies grow: Once they start to get up and around, (usually about 4 weeks or so), they are often moved out into the main living room part of our home for more stimulation and to get used to normal life in a busy household. Having a large play area in the hub of our home is a great way for the puppies to get acclimated to life in YOUR home. They quickly learn that the normal noises of an active family, from TV and vacuuming, to an occasional crash in the kitchen are nothing to be afraid of. You can’t teach them that if they are raised our of sight. Our home is probably much like your home and we want them to have as easy an adjustment as possible.
At Golden Acres we have adopted the Early Neurological Stimulation to start our new pups off. The U.S. Military developed this "Bio Sensory" program for their new puppies in an effort to improve the performance of their dogs. It became known as the "Super Dog" program! Based on years of research, it was found that early neurological stimulation exercises could have important and lasting effects. Their studies confirmed that there are specific time periods early in life when neurological stimulation has optimum results. This window of time begins on the third day of life and lasts till the sixteenth day. It is believed that this interval of time is a period of rapid neurological growth and development. (Remember that puppies at this age don't yet have their eyes open nor can the hear!). It's development utilized five exercises while handling each puppy one at a time, once per day. Each of the five exercises last only 3-5 seconds. You complete all five before starting on the next pup.
Continued routine holding, nail trimming, and later play and socialization are maintained at all age levels.
Five ve benefits have been observed in canines that were exposed to the Bio Sensor stimulation exercises.
- Tactile stimulation ~ gently stimulate (tickles) between the toes using a QTip. 3-5 sec.
- Head held erect ~ using both hands gently hold the pup perpendicular to the ground, so it's head is above its tail. 3-5 sec.
- Head pointed down ~ using both hands gently hold the pup so the head is reversed and is pointed down. 3-5 sec.
- Sublime position ~ gently hold the pup so it's back is resting in the palm of both your hands with its muzzle facing the ceiling. 3-5 sec.
- Thermal stimulation ~ using a damp towel that has cooled in the refrigerator for five minutes, place the pup on the towel, feet down. Do not restrain the pup from moving. 3-5 sec.

Getting a great head-start: In addition to Early Neural Stimulation that helps your new puppy with socialization, your puppy will be introduced to a crate. We put an open crate in with the puppies once they are walking and they quickly learn that this is a great place to play and rest. This is so important whether you are picking up your puppy or she will be shipped to your home. Crate training is an important part of training a puppy and we do what we can to make this part of your life as easy as we can.
